About Our Digital Conversion
During the summer of 2012 the Overlook and Hyde Park Drive-In Theatres were notified by the film industry that 35 millimeter film would no longer be available by the end of 2013. Films were now going to be distributed digitally. This meant we had to convert to digital friendly projection or close both drive-ins.
Since we have been a family run business for over sixty years, we felt we owed it to you, our loyal customers, to remain open. We undertook this enormous investment so that we could better continue to serve you.
Our hope is that when you’re watching the latest films being shown at our drive-in, that you enjoy the clearness of the picture and the crispness of the sound.
History of the Drive-Ins
In 1949, independent theatre owners, Sidney and Ida Cohen expanded their family owned and operated business by opening the Hyde Park Drive-In Theatre. Then, in 1955, they added the Overlook Drive-In Theatre. At the present time, both of these drive-ins continue to be family owned and operated.
Less than a two-hour drive from Manhattan, this is the closest drive-in to Manhattan and the NYC metro area. Situated on 12 acres, with the LARGEST screen in the tri-state area (as tall as a 6-story building) and a capacity for parking 750 cars, Overlook Drive-In provides you with a wonderful drive-in experience as it was during the heyday of America’s love affair with Cinema al fresco – when the vast grass field beneath the huge screen was dotted with hundreds of people outside of their cars, on blankets and lawn chairs on a hot summer night.
Although this location has a large capacity, please plan on arriving early during peak season in order to secure your spot!
We broadcast in stereo on 88.5 FM, and also provide you with a full service concession stand! So the next time you are looking for a great time, come to Overlook Drive-In and we’ll see you at the movies!
